The Satellite Fairs 2008
Midtown

There are seven satellite fairs at the Midtown site in Miami. From the north they are Red Dot, Bridge, Art Miami, Green, Photo Miami, Scope and Art Asia. In alphabetical order they are:

artASIA
A sister fair to Scope but in a separate tent, artAsia will display work from seven Asian countries and more than 40 galleries. Asia, by the way, includes Istanbul. Press and VIP preview noon to 6 pm, Wednesday, Dec. 3; Preview cocktail party at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel, Downtown Miami, invitation only, 7 to 9 pm, Dec. 3; Open to the public Dec. 4 through 7, 10 am to 7 pm, 6pm on Sunday. Admission $15; free with ArtAsia VIP card. ArtAsia is at 31st Street and Midtown Boulevard, Wynwood Arts District, Miami.

Art Miami
This is the fair that couldn’t beat Art Basel, so it joined it, moving from January to December. The Miami Galleries represented  – Cernuda Arte, Dot Fiftyone, Bernice Steinbaum, PanAmerican Art Projects – are among the best  in town. The Art Video and New Media Lounge (sponsored by Blackrock Investments) offers video works, videogames, new media. A champagne reception at Art Miami from 5 pm to 6:30 ($150 a ticket) will benefit the Lotus House Women’s Shelter. Preview, Tuesday, December 2, 5 pm to 10 pm, VIP card and press only. The fair runs Wednesday, Dec. 3 through Sunday, Dec. 7, 11 am to 7 pm, closing at 5 pm on Sunday. Admission, $15. Art Miami is located at Midtown Boulevard between NE 32nd Street and NE 31st Street. The bathrooms are all the way in the back, on the right, through the Art Video lounge. There is also a VIP lounge and restaurant.

Bridge Art Fair/Wynwood
Emerging and new painting, prints, photography, sculpture, video art. The sister to Bridge Art Fair/Miami Beach, Bridge Wynwood will have 33 galleries showing work from Germany, Australia, Canada, China, Hungary, Switzerland, France and the US. VIP first look/preview, 11 am to 6 pm Tuesday, December 2, invitation only; 6 pm opening night reception, Dec. 2, $10; afterparty Ecco Pizzatecca Lounge, 168 SE First Street, Downtown Miami; invitation only. Fair runs from Wednesday, Dec. 3 through Sunday, Dec. 7; 11 am to 9 pm, closing at 7 pm on Sunday, admission, $10. Bridge Art Fair/Wynwood is at Midtown Boulevard and NE 34th Street.

Green Art Fair
The “solar-powered” art fair, Green is back for a second year. They have grown from 5,000 square feet to 18,000 square feet of ecomentaries, green design, eco fashion in a couple of zowie tents, reminiscent of the Sydney Opera House. Projects include 100 % LED: Architectural Illumination by Miami’s own Nick Assunto. Pablo Cano marionette shows each day on a revolving schedule: 5 pm and 5:30 pm on Dec. 3 and 4; 2 pm and 2:30 pm on December 5, then repeat on December 6 and 7. Tuesday, Dec. 2, VIP opening night party from 7:30 to 11 pm, Live Bait Life Music, invitation only. Fair open Dec. 4 through 7 from 11 am to 11 pm, except on Thursday, when it closes at 9, and Sunday, when it closes at 6 pm. The $15 admission for the fair includes the green art lounge at night: nightly from Wednesday on, the green art lounge presents a light show along a DJ ($10 admission, green art lounge only).This fair has a “gourmet” organic café. 3101 Midtown Boulevard, Wynwood Arts District.

Red Dot Art Fair
This interesting and progressive art fair has left hotels behind and moved to a Midtown tent. Among the 37 international galleries are five from Miami: The Americas Collection, Arevalo Arte, Seth Jason Beitler Fine Arts, Onate Fine Art, and the Charest Weinberg Gallery. VIP reception, Tuesday, Dec. 2, 3 pm to 6 pm, invitation only; Opening reception, 6 pm to 9 pm, open to the public. Fair hours: 11 am to 8 pm, except for Sunday, when Photo Miami closes at 5 pm. Red Dot Art Fair is at 36th Street and Midtown Boulevard.

Photo Miami
The fair for photo-based art, video and new media. Photo Miami’s exhibitors include Alonso Art, dpm, and Hardcore Contemporary Art Space in Miami, as well as international galleries like TZR in Dusseldorf, which handles the experimental work of Jasper de Beijer. Opening reception, Tuesday, Dec. 2, 6 pm to 10pm, invitation only. Fair runs Dec. 3 through Dec. 7, 11 to 7 pm, except Wednesday, when it closes at 3 pm, and Sunday, when it closes at 6 pm. Admission, $15, good for the run of the fair.

Scope
One of the most popular satellites, Scope dates back to the founding of Miami Basel in 2002. The fair, which has moved from Roberto Clemente Park to Midtown, will have work from 80 exhibitors, including Diana Lowenstein Fine Arts, Praxis International Art, and Dorsch from Miami, and Eli Klein Fine Art in New York. There are talks on Asian art. FirstView VIP and press, or $100 donation, Wednesday, Dec. 3, 10 am to 6 pm. Press brunch, Dec. 3, 1 pm to 3 pm; Fair runs Dec. 4 through 7, 10 am to 7 pm, closing at 6 pm on Sunday. Admission $15, free to VIP card holders. Scope and its sister Art Asia are at 2961 Midtown Boulevard at NE 30th Street.

Naomi Campbell is the opening act for In Fashion Photo (invitation only). 
This fair combines the jujhz of Ocean Drive with the sexiness of a parking lot.
Basically, it's every perfume ad you've ever seen, but now you can
buy the photo. Admission, $10.

Right across from Aqua Wynwood is a homegrown "niche" fair event,
with food tasting, cocktails, videos, speed dates. Oh boy!

Fountain Art Fair
2505 North Miami Avenue
Wynwood
Everyone calls it the anti-art fair, so we will too. Suggested
donation $5. VIP Press brunch, Wed Dec 3 from 10 am to noon
and Thurs 9 am to noon. Reception for artists Friday, 7 to midnight.
Suggested donation, $5.


Geisai

Back for its second year, Geisai is juried show of young artists.
There were some real discoveries there last year. A completely new crew
this year. And the $15 admissing for Pulse includes Geisai.


NADA Art Fair

It's a trek, even with the circulator shuttle bus, but NADA is a must-see.
The New Art Dealers Alliance always has interesting painting,sculpture,
photographs and installations. Admission, free. And wrap your head
arount this one: Banana Republic is the sponsor. We. See. T-shirts.


Pulse
Soho Studios

There are those who swear by Scope, and there are those who swear by
Pulse. It's rare to find someone who loves them both. But both are fantastic.
One of my favorite galleries, Postmasters, was originally at Scope,
switched to Pulse last year, and is back at Pulse again this year.
See Postmasters' exhibit of new media at booth B-501, just past the food
court. The $15 admission is also good for Geisai. Preview party, Tuesday night.
Fair hours 10 am to 6 pm, Thursday through Saturday, 10 am to 3 on
Wednesday, 10 am to 5 pm on Sunday.
