And, below, one more attempt by Interview magazine to dominate Thursday with a "special night performance" from 9:30 to 1 am at the Water Salon of the Delano. But, hello, this invitation admits ONE? Guys, there's a lot going on tonight. Do you really think you'll be swamped?

| Mr. Chow at the W South Beach |
| Wednesday is the winner for busiest, biggest night of the fair, even though competing schedules made some events other than Larry Gagosian's dinner at Mr. Chow, a little underpopulated. The other events were the sold-out sit-down dinner at the Wolfsonian ($1,000 a plate), with what looked like five wine glasses at each place setting; a party "in the garage" for the hip store Alchemist; a Jeffrey Deitch party, a Steve Martin book signing, and a blow-out event at the Bass Museum, plus, of course, the vernissage.
Larry Gagosian dinner at Mr. Chow: celebrities: China Chow, Ben Stiller, Steve Martin, Julian Lennon; manager of Madonna: Guy Oseary; art world figures, nonlocal: Steve Cohen, Marco Brambilla, Julian & Vito Schnabel, Dasha Zhukova, Aby Rosen, Nicholas Berggruen, Klaus Biesenbach, Jean Pigozzi; art world figures, local: Mera & Donald Rubell, Jason & Michelle Rubell; art publicist: Bettina Prentice; socialites: Daphne Guinness, Nicky Hilton, Princess Firyal of Jordan, Annabelle Dexter Jones; models and designers: Linda Evangelista, Calvin Klein; designer’s agent: Stuart Parr; wife of media mogul: Wendy Murdoch; showmen: Andre Balazs, Bob Shaye; press: Guy Trebay, Horacio Silva, Stefano Tonchi, Linda Yablonsky, Derek Blasberg; baseball player: Alex Rodriguez.

| Abby Kellett owner of Gretel Home |
| The charming English lass, Abby Kellett, formerly the creative director of the design magazine Florida InsideOut, has opened a no-less charming store in Miami called Gretel. Already discovered by The New York Times T magazine, and several other design publications, Gretel is now producing a special Art Basel event, Once and Again, with limited edition pieces, which will be on exhibit until the Sunday afternoon, Dec. 5. Online until midnight. Bass Museum on Collins Park, near the Convention Center. Quirky, delightful and affordable, Gretel's wares are worth a look. It's hard to pick just one, so here are a few.

What is there to say about the private openings of Art Basel Miami Beach? Certainly getting in at 2 pm is cooler than waiting until 6. And getting in at noon is cooler yet. And then there is the array of VIP cards: VIP, Special VIP, etc. It's all some game. The actual vernissage, at 6 pm, saw the following notables: Calvin Klein, Danny Glover, George Hamilton, the Miami developer Jorge Perez, Ben Stiller, Tony Shafrazi, Isabella Rossellini, Lucas & Isabelle Bscher, Mary Boone, Julian Schnabel, Pilar Crespi, Adrienne Vittadini, Thomas Kramer (the Miami developer who says he is now 10 months sober), Kenny Schachter, Kim Heirston Evans, Sildy Cervera (the Miami Beach condo specialist), Laura de Gunzburg, Michele Oka Doner, Barbara Guggenheim, and Mickey Wolfson. Lots of self-important Miamians skipped looking at the art and once again huddled in the Collector's Lounge, with other Miamians.

| A snail approached Alton Road |
Pink Snails. The Cracking Art Group of Rome (Italy) has commited itself to public works, like these plastic beasties. The snails, slowly "crawling" from the western side of Miami Beach to the ocean, or at least Collins Park, are made of recycled plastic, dyed a kind of Pept-bismol pink heading toward fuchsia. Their slow progress is intended to teach us to slow down. Also, to give us more time to get used to them and perhaps buy one. There are 45 of them, 20 big and 25 small. A small one is crawling across the floor at BASE on Lincoln Road, where the asking price is $5,000. .

| Ingrid Donat's animated bronze dresser |
| Heard opening night of DesignMiami: "People are buying." Those are encouraging words. Champagne-glass wielding shoppers and lookers (thanks Veuve Clicquot, $16 a glass for nonVIPs) hovered over chairs, stuffed artworks (don't call them toys), dressers, tables, lamps, rugs, and sofas in the new exhibition tent, this one done in vinyl by Moorhead & Moorhead in New York. DesignMiami moved to the beach this year, and it paid off. "I've been on my feet since noon," Barry Friedman said at 9 pm, sporting what he said were comfortable white Paul Smith lace-up shoes. He had already sold one of Ingrid Donat's fascinating bronze dressers, with side gear action, for $125,000. (He has one left at the same price, and the last two in the series of eight will be more, so hurry!)

| Shelley Acoca tries out a $64,000 sofa at DesignMiami |
Jean Royere's Elephant sofa sold right away at Patrick Seguin's booth at Design Miami. To sum up: if you like this sort of thing (French Art Deco), you'll really like this sort of thing. And Todd Merrill's booth had some knockout pieces carved from olive ash by Joseph Walsh, a Irish furniture maker. The asking price for Walsh's dining table was, according to DesignMiami, $145,000. It sold.

Cristina Crajales had another amazing piece, a wooden cabinet with dozens (hundreds?) of hinged, moving parts. At the vernissage, she was deep in discussion with a couple looking at the piece. Lighting was big, with a giant serpentine chandelier, oh, excuse us, an "illuminated sculpture," by Jeff Zimmerman at R 20th Century. It was so large it would fit only in an opera house, or perhaps a basketball player's house. (You hear us Alonzo?) There was also a, as far as we can tell non-crystal, chandelier in the Swarovski booth, with clever gears operating lights that dunked themselves in little pools of water, making pools of light on the floor.

| rAndom lighting from Carpenters Workshop in London |
Another chandelier (lightwork?) was at the Carpenters Workship Gallery in London, a newcomer this year at Design Miami. The folks behind this one call themselves rAndrom, who also did the interactive mirrored ceiling at Alchemist, the groovy store on the fifth floor of the Herzon & de Meuron parking garage on Lincoln Road. (Thank Rene Gonzalez, an underappreciated Miami architect, for enlisting rAndom in the project.) The lights in their triple chandelier at Carpenters Workshop seemed to be linked to sound, which was funny because people stood awestruck and silent watching it not so much. But put one of those pieces over a dinner table, and wow-eee.
Even the food in the Assouline concession was terrific, with cute, attentive waiters. "May I carry that tray for you?" one asked as we carried two champagne flutes, and he carried a smartly dressed salad, a small sandwich, and a little cup of pesto. ($45)
The prices you ask? In the R 20th Century booth there were handmade stuffed toys by Renate Muller for $4,500 to $5,500. Pretty much sold out. "But we can get them for you in New York," a gallerista said. More to the point, R sold the Poul Kjerholm architect's cabinet "in the first 15 minutes."

Perrier sponsored an opening night party for Design Miami at the Standard South Beach. And then the same crowd traveled across the island and uptown to Soho Beach House, where the quaff of choice was Veuve Clicquot. (What they did for Veuve.) It was called a BBQ, but some guests couldn't find any. Others said you had to grab what you could from a passing tray. Craig Robins and Wava Carpenter hosted the party. But Craig, who lives in Miami Beach, is not a member of Soho Beach House, the private club that opened at 41st Street and Collins in October. "I don't believe in those membership things," he said, a sentiment often heard in Miami. Besides, he said, he knew lots of Miami people who were members, so he was invited there all the time. Another common Miami Beach sentiment. Guests included Pharrell Williams (music producer and, um, clothing designer), a lot of people speaking French, a lot of people speaking Italian, a lot of pretty girls, the Miami architect and designer Luis Pons, and the business partners Zesty Meyers and Evan Snyderman, who own the R 20th Century design store in New York. Best part of the evening: after the nightmare at the valet parking on arrival, leaving was a breeze.

| ABMB opens on Wednesday, December 1, with the invitation-only vernissage. Design Miami opens November 30, this time at a new temporary structure in a parking lot near the Convention Center. (It growed up and decided to join the big boys.) There are nine satellite fairs, from Art Asia to Verge. (Photo Miami canceled at the last minute.) There are pop up stores. International museums have booked their dinner parties. New restaurants have sprung up. Soho Beach House will challenge Abe Rosen's W hotel as this year's hot spot, starting with a party on Monday night, Nov. 29, hosted by Veuve Cliquot for a new bed. Art stars (Robert Indiana, Marc Newson, Hans Ulrich Obrist), celebrities (Julian Lennon, Isabella Rossellini, Tilda Swinton, Steve Martin) and luxury products (Cartier, Netjets, and see Veuve Cliquot above) will jostle for attention. MA2Dweek (Miami Art, Architecture & Design Week) is here for the fourth year to tell you who is here, what is happening, when to go, where, and why you should care. At left, Charles Burchfield's 1957 watercolor, "Twilight Phantom," at the DC Moore booth in the Convention Center.

Copyright © Linda Lee 2010 Photo Miami, which popped up during Art Basel 2005, dropped out in late October this year, with the announcement that Photomarkt, its parent company, was unable to raise adequate funds. Also among the missing are familiar names like Aqua and Zone, and at Design Miami, Moss. But the others are sticking with it. NADA found a new home last year at the Deauville, in the far-north location of 67th and Collins. It seemed doomed, but art dealers and buyers were thrilled. Great location. The gallerist got rooms upstairs, right over the store, at decent rates, and had a view of the ocean. Goodbye Ice Palace! The behemoth Art Miami will anchor the fairs at Midtown, on the mainland. It hunkers down at 31st and NE First, alongside Red Dot, Art Asia, and the nearby Fountain Art Fair, at 25th and North Miami Avenue. The third fair in Midtown, Scope, took a spot in the same neighborhood, at 3055 North Miami Avenue (that's 30th Street) between North Miami Avenue and Midtown Boulevard, also known as NE First Avenue. Pulse, the other must-see satellite, grabbed the old spot that NADA abandoned at 1400 N Miami Avenue. (Hello Ice Palace!) The final three satellites, INK, Pool and Verge will settle in at, respectively, the Dorchester, the Carlton and the Catalina Hotels in Miami Beach.

We're off to a fast start in 2010, with a few exhibits opening here and there (a mural at the Townhouse Hotel, Sculpt Miami in Wynwood and at the Downtown Campus of Miami Dade College), a cocktail party at Ornare in the Design District to celebrate architects and designers, a cocktail party at the Webster for Gaetano Pesce, and two welcoming events for Design Miami, a reception at the Standard South Beach, and a Champagne BBQ at Soho Beach House hosted by Craig Robins and Wava Carpenter. See Schedule Nov. 29.

Now we begin. Tuesday night will see the vernissage for DesignMiami (without Moss Gallery from New York, but with the Carpenters Woodshop Gallery, out of France, offering limited edition items like the Wrecking Ball Lamp, above), a media preview for Julian Lennon's show of photographs, the openings of the big satellite fairs (Scope, Pulse, Art Asia, Art Miami), the private NetJets cocktail party for the high-rollers, a party to show off Marc Newson's new boat, the Acquariva, at the Standard Hotel, and the always welcome Vanity Fair-MOCA kickoff party in North Miami. But don't stay out too late. Tomorrow is the vernissage for the Art Basel Miami Beach fair. The Tuesday Schedule is here.

It's official. Finally, the Art Basel Miami Beach Vernissage. There's also an opening downtown, at the Marriott Marquis Hotel, of an exhibit of 20th Century art to be sold Spring 2011 by Christie's, including works by Damien Hirst, Keith Haring, and Andy Warhol. The annual Art Loves Music free performance on the beach is, this year, by a Canadian group called Metric. A $1,000 a plate dinner for Isabella Rossellini, hosted by the Wolfsonian and Robert Mondavi wines, has food by Jean Georges Vongerichten and a hook-up with Bvlgari (tickets are pretty much gone, padres). And there is the annual opening night reception at the Bass Museum of art, following the Convention Center vernissage. Steve Martin signs books at the W, invitation only. Jeffrey Deitch, above, throws his traditional opening night party at the Raleigh, very very invitation only. And the uberdealer Larry Gagosian, above, takes over Mr Chow. The coolest people in town will manage to snag invitations to both events. See the complete listings for December 1 here.

Ok, calm down. So you missed the Visionaire party, and the Gagosian dinner, and the Deitch party. You couldn't get into Le Baron and you didn't eat dinner with Isabella Rossellini. There is still time to not only see art and design, but to live la vida loca. Case in point: a reception for Susan Sarandon, sponsored by MOCA (the one in North Miami). Also on deck: matinees for the film about Andy Warhol and Robert Indiana (tickets a must). And if you have an extra $750, and there are still tickets left, you can head to the Mandarin Oriental for the Annual MAM Ball. For a complete schedule, look here.
