Marni for Miami
Oh admit it. You want a break from looking at things. Or watching people buy million dollar paintings. The local merchants (and restaurants) are waiting for you with special offers and events for Art Basel. Some suggestions

Marni 3930 NE 2nd Avenue (across from the Moore Building and next to Gucci), Design District
This men's and women's apparel store, new to Miami, is offering the Marni for Miami tote bag, with signature polka dots, silver-studded leather handle, and leather tag proclaiming "Marni for Miami." A portion of the proceeds will go to the Miami Museum of Art and the Bass Museum.

Kartell, 155 NE 40th Street, Design District
Extended hours during Art Basel, from 10 am to 8 pm and a free artisanal cupcake, in a numbered and signed edition to celebrate 60 years of design. You could buy a chair, too

Bisazza, 3740 NE 2nd Avenue, Design District
This new flagship store for the Italian company has on display Studio Job's Silver Ware Collection, large sculptures covered in white gold mosaic.

Cappellini, 10 NE 39th Street, Design District
The store has a display of iconic designs from 2005 to 2009, and three new pieces designed for Art Basel by Giulio Cappellini, Dror Benshetrit and Tom Dixon.

Peacock chair by Dror Benshetrit for Cappellini
Ursa the Bear, $125 at GretelHome

GretelHome Moore Building, 39th Street, Design District
Downstairs you will find Fendi and Martin Margiela. But climb the stairs. On the third floor is a tightly edited collection of affordable throws, dinnerware, pottery, and gifts selected from around the world by Abby Kellett, a local gal. My pick would be Ursa, the pose-able wooden bear for children or adults ($125). But everything in the booth is adorable. As is Abby.

More Public Events and Private Parties

Saturday Dec 5  7 pm to 9 pm
At the 6,000 square foot Duncan Quinn pop-up store in the Design District there is a full size croquet pitch, tucked in between the  gangster-chic ties and narrow-cut suits. Today at 4 pm Duncan Quinn himself along with Social Diva and Hendricks gin (the famous, or infamous, British gin that comes in nearly 100 proof, so be warned!) will offer a croquet tournament, played by what are certain to be well-dressed, and possibly plastered teammates. And yes, they really did get that vintage 1962 Maserati in through the window. 4040 NE 2nd Ave., the Moore Building, Design District
